Mason Bee Harvest 2018

On Nov 10, 2018 I harvested my Mason Bees, as stated previously, I had 18 of 20 purchased bees survive.

Bottom board removed
The Hive boards were home-made, which were not very accurate, but the Bees did not seem to mind.

First Layer of the Nest

I cleaned, washed, and counted this years results: we have about 250 new Cocoons to put into the fridge for next years release. There seems to be a good mix of Males to Females.

Wood shaving and a small damp fold of Paper Towel was placed inside with the Bees.  The damp Paper Towel was place away from the Bees.  They will be up-front on top-shelf in the fridge where I can watch them.

Jan, my daughter-in-law's mother, helped with the harvest.

In empty holes we found many Yellow Jackets, holding up for the winter - they did not survive the process.

Late Year Activity

As of  May 15, 2018, all but 2 of the Mason Bees have emerged (18 of the 20 purchased).

There are about 30 tubes that have been capped, with several others that may be 1/2  filled .

There has not seen any Flying Bees for several days.

The top half of the Hotel was quickly created with a 5/16 router bit.

Later, the bottom black section was 3D Printed with PLA.  One PLA tube is capped, others may have short nests.

Next year, both wood and PLA nests will be provided at the same time.

Initial Bees

I purchased a set of 20 NW Mason Bees from Crown Bees about Apr 7, 2018.

They were installed in a homemade house on about Apr 15, 2018.
